Show 23 – There We Are
Ruth Hayes animates in film, video and pre-cinema formats, exploring diverse topics using experimental approaches to both form and content. Her 1990 video Wanda contrasts feline and feminine desire and her 1994 film, Reign of the Dog; A Re-visionist History critiques mainstream representations of the conquest of the Americas. In 2005 her flipbooks were featured in “Daumenkino: The Flipbook Show” at Düsseldorf’s Kunsthalle. Her 2011 On Our Way is a phenomenological meditation on contrasts between wild and settled landscapes in western Washington State. Recent works include experimentation with the material, haptic and stochastic effects of direct animation. Ruth earned her MFA at CalArts and is on the faculty at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, where she teaches animation in broadly interdisciplinary contexts.
