Lana Z Caplan is a film/videomaker, photographer, and interactive video installation artist. Caplan’s various technical approaches in her work are unified by her thematic concerns, which revolve around exploring the cultural effects of environmental change, challenges and gaps in cross-cultural communication, the construction and deconstruction of narrative form and the immateriality of the post-internet digital image, including the medium of video. Interaction with the audience is often an important component in the completion of the work. She has utilized motion sensors and interactive computer software to control video playback, used sound installations and wallpapered galleries with images to fabricate environments for experiential works.
Caplan has traveled extensively making videos and photographs. She spent five years living between Boston, New York City and the Amalfi Coast of Italy while making her film Sospira (2010) and several other short videos. In 2012, she worked in China as an Artist-in-Residence at the Inside Out Art Museum, Beijing, culminating in exhibitions in Beijing, Paris, New Zealand and the US. She has also been a Fellow in the Film/Video Studio Program at Wexner Center for the Arts (Columbus, OH) and a resident artist at Experimental Television Center, (Oswego, NY). In addition to public art commissions, her work has been exhibited and screened in solo and group exhibitions around the world in cities such as Beijing, New York, San Francisco, San Juan, Edinburgh, Mexico City, Philadelphia, Boston, Manitoba, New Delhi, Tel Aviv, Valparaiso, and Barcelona. Caplan earned her MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and BA from Boston University and has been a faculty member at several colleges, most enduringly at Massachusetts College of Art and in the Visual Art Department at University of California, San Diego.
