UNLESS YOU’RE LIVING IT; Sarah Bliss; USA; Hand processed 16mm to digi; 8:22
A portrait of place and power in rural white Ontario that challenges the correlation between seeing and knowing, and the ravages of late-stage capitalism.  Hand processing, contact printing, tinting and toning engage the film as a body that, like the residents of Mt. Forest, sustains injuries, wounds and burdens, but also has the capacity for delight, revelatory pleasure, and transformation. With special thanks to Phil Hoffman and the 2016 Independent Imaging Retreat (Film Farm), where Unless You’re Living It was shot and hand-processed.

APPALLING NATURE; Emilie Crewe; Canada; 9.23
Erin is on her way home after a long day’s work. She follows the elongated shadows of barren trees as she struggles to find her way, battling her own inner voice. Unsure if she is being hunted, her thoughts align with a nearby doe, whose instincts are sparked by carnal awareness. An array of household pets serve as counterparts to the protagonist’s own sense of captivity. Like Erin, they are unintentional prisoners. They are her unforseen spirit guides; animal totems of her everyday stresses. A thoughtful meditation on anxiety and uncertainty, Appalling Nature is a journey through mental suffering and winter landscapes.

Based on found footage and home-movies filmed on super and regular 8mm during Yugoslavia and affected by chemical deterioration, this work focuses on exploring the possibilities of “women’s writing” and the specificity of female experiences. Childbirth and the termination of pregnancy are just some of the many experiences that are traditionally represented and marginalized in the social and political context due to the dominance of established narratives.

Ominous cinegrams of Albrecht Dürer’s Melencolia print intercut, like cascading scythes, with depictions of a woman in a field, evoking repetitions that exist in harvest rituals, as well as in gestures of madness. Specters of familial anxieties creep into this loose take on the myth of Poludnica (noonwraith or Lady Midday), a Slavic harvest spirit that could cause madness in those who wandered the fields alone.

SOMETIMES ALL OF SUMMERTIME; Linda Fenstermaker; USA; 8.30
This film explores the innocence, beauty and energy in the natural rhythms of a season. The focus on summertime is a metaphor for the process of combining lives with another person and the tugging feelings of that union.

An autobiographical examination of the experience of loss through the landscape of a dream. Memory and the subconscious find new visual forms in this exploration of real and imagined relationships.

Cat Secrets is a video essay on the acts we take to heal from depression.

THE FLOATING WORLD; Janelle VanderKelen; USA; 16.00
Ghostly hauntings function as symptoms of a distraught environment in a series of interdependent retellings of a myth about the time the Sun ran away. The re-stagings are informed by the Japanese poet Akiko Yosano’s understanding of human bodies and personal relations as integrally politicized entities and actions, and her influence inspires a closer examination of how humans interact with the environment and the “non-human.”
