FEATURED WORKS:
CEALLAIGH AT KILMAINHAM; Kelly Gallagher; USA; 7.00; 8MM to digi
A found footage collaged and handcrafted exploration of land, roots, radical history, and the strength of the women who came before me.
I INHERIT MY GRANDMOTHER’S FEAR II; Shirin Mozaffari; USA; 1.00; digi
Inherit My Grandmother’s fear II is a part of a series of animations exploring the inheritance of fear through generations of women. The over imposed morphing photographs include personal family portraiture of the artist, her mother and her grandmother in addition to the artist posing as her great grandmother in her great grandmother’s clothing.
STUDIES IN SILENCE: 3. DOMESTICATING WILD THINGS; Whitney Johnston; USA; 2.11; digi
An experiment in silence and its effect on perception. The Kristeva quote is from an essay that she wrote which was in part an investigation of mothering and the cult of the Virgin Mary and in part a description of her own experience with maternity. I relate it to my video both as a singular, out-of-context statement and also with the thought that: we are damned from the moment we are born.
AFTER THE RAINBOW; Soda_Jerk; AUSTRALIA; 5.42; digi
Through a re-imagining of the initial sequence of The Wizard of Oz (1939), the fantasy world of cinema and the reality of Judy Garland’s complex life collide. Instead of taking Dorothy to Oz, the twister transports a young, hopeful Garland into the future where she encounters her disillusioned adult self.
BE MY CLONE; Laura Hyunjhee Kim; USA; 2.21; digi
I am interested in the language, sound and movements of the body and how all of these elements are used in communication. Quoting and re-contextualizing from autobiographical references, art history to mass media, I pull source materials from the everyday. Appropriating familiar images and stylistic formalities from popular culture, I embrace absurdity and my recent works have been subjected to my “It’s Complicated” love and hate relationship with the Internet and technology.
MALDITA VOUGUE (BAD VOUGUE); Júlia Portella & Melina Schleder; Photography director: Tiago Lage, PozziLabs, Tiago Tambelli, Fernando Augusto, Pedro Maffei, Peterson Lomovtov; Editi: Alexandre Barreto; Art Direction: Júlia Portella e Melina Schleder; Costume Design: Júlia Portella e Melina Schleder; Original Soundtrack: Júlio Manaf; Sound Designer: Júlio Manaf; BRAZIL; 11.10; digi
A movie about the desire to fit in and the way this desire can consume you.
A DAY’S PLEAD; Linda Fenstermaker; USA; 7.15; 16MM to digi
“A Day’s Plead” explores anxiety and unease within oneself and the space one inhabits. Focusing on the structural forms of objects that make up a house, the film questions the nature of ‘home’ itself. Through the symbology of windows, doors and maps, “A Day’s Plead” attempts to understand feelings of dislocation and isolation in the everyday.
QUEEN TAKES PAWN; Su Friedrich; USA; 6.43; 8mm to digi
A journey through an old house by way of a mirror, a child’s storybook, and some images from days gone by. Or a journey through some old images by way of a house. Or both.

EFFIGY IN EMULSION; Karissa Hahn; USA; 3.10
Super 8 found footage is reconstructed – taped to 16mm – and refilmed on the optical printer. An excavation of uncovering a stolen frame, that a photographer stole.
GHOST SYNDROME; Rita Piffer; USA; TRT: 7.10; digi A film portrait of a Moroccan lesbian who immigrated to the United States, and the emotional resonances of living in-between cultures.
SHARING IS CARING; Laura Hyunjhee Kim; USA; 2.33
An exploration in the various modes of communication, is presented in the formats of a music video, with appropriated tropes of popular culture, and an abstraction of words and imagery through repetition. Referring to the anonymous communities built through social media networks (such as Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter), the piece remixes found-gifs highlighting the circulation of individual stories and questioning the relationships of floating identities within the digital net space
THE SPIRITUAL MACHINE; Ana Rodríguez León; Actress: Elzbieta Surmacz; Director of photography: Nadia McGowan; Edit: Emm Tusell, Ana Rodríguez León; Music: David
Crespo; SPAIN; 19.00; An hypnotic travel to the inner part of human being and the deep mystery it keeps inside. A mystery so full of beauty and of destructive potential. Illness, understood as a possible conflict between the emotive, cognitive and bodily facets of human being, reveals its power as a tool for introspection and self-knowledge.
STORY OF A CURSE #1; Negin Sharifzadeh; 4.49; digi
Story of a Curse, is a series of short animated films based on my familial stories. The first film is inspired by my mother’s story of moving through loss and despair. She was two weeks away from her due date that she realized there was something wrong with the baby in her womb. the doctor not realizing the umbilical cord has been wrapped around the baby’s neck which resulted in his death. My mom was then forced to give birth to a dead baby. Birth, a symbol of bringing new life, had now changed to delivering death into the world of the living. After almost 9 months of waiting, all the dreams she had of becoming a mother had shattered. Preparing the baby’s room, preparing herself for motherhood and the joy she has shared with family and friends around her. They were all gone inside a day. To sooth herself, she came to believe that she had been cursed and had to take the baby to the cemetery instead of home. My film deals with the dream of mother- hood, the emotional bond between a baby in the womb and the mother, and the connection between the body of a baby developing inside the mother’s body. It looks at the hopes carried by the promise of new life and hope, and the grief as it was stolen.
ABANDONED GENERATIONS; Linda Fenstermaker; USA; TRT:10.00
A portrait of farmland in the Pacific Northwest, “Abandoned Generations” explores relationships with land and time in different generations. Told through the perspective of a female farmer living in the 1940s, the film questions the distance that modern society has from the earth and how that relationship informs daily life.
QUEEN TAKES PAWN; Su Friedrich; USA; 6.43
A journey through an old house by way of a mirror, a child’s storybook of ALICE through the LOOKING GLASS, and some images from days gone by. Or a journey through some old images by way of a house. Or both.
